Summary/Abstract: But “Ostalgia” does not indicate a political preference. By all accounts, the 1970s and 1980s were just as bleak and forbidding in the former East Germany. And yet the popularity of the recent film Goodbye Lenin has highlighted the fact that a certain yearning or nostalgia for the bad old days of communism now seems to be pervading the eastern part of Germany. In our culture section, German-based Czech journalist Bedřich Utitz looks at the reasons behind the “ostalgia” phenomenon.
