The Poet's Mother Tongues

Summary/Abstract: Taking the opportunity offered by a recent cultural event-the presentation of Sebastian Reichmann's book of poems"Balayeur devant sa Porte"at the French Cultural Institute in Bucharest, Nicolae Manolescu brings into discussion the issue of the exclusive use of Romanian language in Romanian literature. The author points out two aspects of this exclusiveness: the consequence of isolation faced by Romanian literature and the common practice of limiting a writer's recognition to the use of Romanian language only in a literary work. This attitude constantly adopted by Romanian critics is considered as a nonrealistic one since a lot of Romanian authors successfully used other foreign languages in their works.
