The Albigensian Crusade and the appearance of the Inquisition. Historical considerations

Summary/Abstract: This study presents an accessible introduction to the history of the Cathar heresy in medieval France. Cathar beliefs seemed to have popped up around the same time in many countries, not only the Languedoc, but also France, the Netherlands and various German states. Concerned about the spread of the Cathar heresy, the papacy began a religious struggle against heretics in the South of France. Heretics were also considered dangerous because they were vassals of the Counts of Toulouse. After the failure of prediction, a military conquest, led by French lords of the North, was the unique option left to Pope Innocent III, who proclaimed a Crusade against the Cathars (1209-1229). For all of its violence and destruction, the Crusade failed to remove the Cathar heresy from Languedoc. This was the main reason for the papacy to create the institution of Inquisition in the 13th century, to discover and eliminate all vestiges of Cathar belief left after the Crusades.
