Summary/Abstract: The education for autonomy has emerged in the recent decades as a new challenge in education, both for the education decision makers, as well as for the theorists and practitioners of this system. The need for this type of education, seen as a different and new response to the contemporary world issues, is equally determined by significant social challenges (autonomy as a fundamental transversal competence, inherent to the contemporary man), as well as by a certain psychological conditioning (every person’s need of autonomy). The topic has been approached by reference to some important frameworks: its issues and definition, the targeted goals and objectives, autonomization as a formative process. Special attention is given to the pedagogical teacher-student relationship as a basis for developing a child’s autonomy. Moreover, the teacher’s status as a behavioural role model is analyzed. In this study, the development perspectives in this field are described through some important worldwide experiences, focusing on the autonomy development in school by means of some specific learning strategies.
