Summary/Abstract: In this article the origin of reindeer-breeding of Khanty is explored on the basis of linguistic data. It is proved that eastern Khanty who used practically primordial (from the point of view of Ob-Ugrian etymology) names of reindeer, practiced Tundra type of reindeer-breeding. The last one was probably inherited from Proto-Ob-Ugrians. On the contrary there were more than 10 names of reindeer in use by western Khanty and all of these names were borrowed from Samoyed languages. Conducted research shows that western Khanty practiced Taiga type of reindeer-breeding. As is well known from ethnographic research, this type of reindeer-breeding was borrowed from Samoyed. Thus, linguistic and ethnographic data about the origin of the Khanty reindeer-breeding perfectly match each other.
