Summary/Abstract: A performance appraisal system includes evaluation of qualifications for the respective position, evaluation of professional experience, training, and evaluation of personal performance of employees. The subject of the research includes the identification and analysis of the role of documentation in the performance appraisal system of employees in the institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The structured questionnaire and method of disproportionate stratified random sample includes the highest, middle and the lowest level of management. The results of the empirical research show that the purpose of the current performance appraisal system in the state institution is reflected in respect of legal obligations and ordinances. A contribution of the paper is reflected in proposed amendments to the law and governing regulations on the performance appraisal system of employees.
