English-Polish Phraseology in Wielki s³ownik angielsko-polski PWN

Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the lexicographic presentation of English phraseology in Wielki s³ownik angielsko-polski PWN. The author deals with many aspects of the description of English idioms in this bilingual dictionary. Due to the practical application of the dictionary, the author focuses only on these aspects of the description which appear in the dictionary under discussion and which are of utmost importance for potential users. The paper discusses, among other problems, the issue of classification of phraseologisms and the selection of phraseological material for the lexicon, the form and the place of phraseologisms in the lexicon entries, phraseological cross-referencing, the translation of English phraseologisms into Polish. The author refers to both right and wrong decisions of the lexicographers; at the same time he speaks highly of the accurate presentation of the English phraseology in the dictionary.
