Summary/Abstract: In the article we will try to answer the question about the new, wider curriculum in the range of civic education, introduced in Polish schools in 2009. We will consider its impact on students’ deficiencies in the field of civic education as well as a chance that this change will compensate for the pupils’ lack of knowledge. In the first part of the article we will present an overview of Polish civic education as well as its current form. We will indicate advantages and disadvantages of last changes in the curriculum. Afterwards, we will discuss the results on international research of civic knowledge and attitudes (International Civic and Citizenship Study 2009) in the context of new teaching content of the civic education programme, which, as we think, is not able to compensate for students’ deficiencies in this area. In the end, we are going to consider the main causes of this problem, such as: limited scope of contents, emphasis on the political education, absence of requirements which make students argue or draw conclusions.
