Summary/Abstract: The analysis presented in the article concerns problems and main solutions in the field of teacher education and the quality of teacher work in Europe and in Poland. The reforms of educational system in all European countries have included teacher education. In the discussions among representatives of policy makers, academic professors and school teachers, old problems have appeared as well as new ones. What educational institutions should train teachers and on what academic level should it be done? How to formulate teacher education standards (and should they be created at all)? What should recruitment and induction to the teacher profession be like? How to motivate teachers to professional development? The established solutions, being answers to these questions in the European countries, are presented and discussed in the article. This discussion is also important in Poland, where teacher education is far from excellence and the induction of young teachers to the profession practically does not exist.
