A 'first' proper name

Summary/Abstract: Benjamin’s analysis of the role of proper nouns is based on a questionable interpretation of the book of Genesis – in reality, the genesis of language – which marks the creation of the « first » proper noun : Eve. Benjamin’s alternative between use-value and exchange-value is invalid. The projection of the conception of language onto that of history enables an exploration of the link between temporality and meaning in proper nouns.
