Summary/Abstract: This article outlines the epigenetic principle of ego development, introduced by Erik Erikson. It traces out the eight stages of personal development and the ego-strengths resulting from the successful solution of the developmental tasks. Accent is on the relation among the individual stages of ego development and the benefits and implications following each developmental stage. Focus is on the intimacy statuses, suggested by Orlofsky (1976). Similar to the status paradigm of identity (Marcia, 1966) and exploration of four psychosocial identity statuses, five intimacy statuses are outlined based on the degree of achieved intimacy and attachment and personal attainment. Author proposes analogy between conceptualization of identity and intimacy by the means of two bipolar dimensions — degree of attained choice vs. lack of choice and degree of personal engagement in the choice-making vs. lack of activity.
