Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the ways narrative strategies contribute to representations of gender and history in two recent novels by Serbian women writers. Set in the 18th century Belgrade, Mirjana Novaković’s Fear and Servant (2000) revolves around the arrival of the commission from Vienna to investigate vampires, exposing political manipulations within the frame of a gothic plot. Mirjana Đurđević’s Kaya, Belgrade and the Good American (2009) combines docudrama, satire, and mystery in picturing encounters of cultures in the Belgrade from the 1920’s to the 1950’s, whereas Jelena Lengold prefers to follow in the footsteps of the American short story and portray ordinary lives.
