George Calinescu. The Concept of Nationally Specific

Summary/Abstract: There has always been a theory of “the two beginnings” in what concerns our literary history. As a matter of fact, this theory is confirmed by the facts themselves and by the development of literary trends, as well as by the level, mentality, value and formal “shift” that occurs between the centuries of the first start and the 19th century. Thus, there might have been a “major” start, with Dosoftei and the Moldavian chronicles or Cantemir and the Walachian chronicles. But this major start was somehow forgotten and arout the 19th century the literature started all over again. The refinement, even the sophisticated construction were substituted by the love-like sighs and pass-outs of the Vacaresti’s, of Conachi and many others. According to Nicolae Manolescu, these were, in fact, the poets who invented the modern Romanian literature, nevertheless establishing its genres and species we are dealing with nowadays.
