Under the Sight of the Others: the Priest in the Community

Summary/Abstract: The present study proposes the deciphering of the religious life at the rural level, option in concord with the present evolution of European historiography. Our trial limits itself to a local survey: the Orthodox residence of Târgu-Mureş in Şaguna's epoch. I successively had in view the main misbehaviours (drinking, clothing aspect, un-fulfilment of church services, altercations with the auxiliary ecclesiastic personnel, marital infidelity etc.), but also the positive aspects (catechisation, participation in rank synods and in judgement groups of priests, supervision of social climate). Firm conclusions are difficult to be formulated without other studies alike, dedicated to other ranks. However, it is obviously a real improvement of morals and also understanding of the clerical status, particularly in the case of the priests belonging to the young generation. All these may be the result of Şaguna's post-Enlightenment programme.
