Summary/Abstract: As new forms of ICT are being developed on an almost daily basis, an important question arises: which of these forms, technologies, and devices become successful or even predominant, and how do they change the entire media context, especially the ways audiences interact with the media? The paper looks at the ways new ICT or new media are introduced into society and the economy; the aim of the author is to find the rationale behind them and the clues to their success or failure. Examples of such new media technologies are analysed, specifically HDTV and digital broadcasting . The paper examines their purposes and the policies involved in their introduction into the market and society as a whole. A number of paradigms are used: structural functional, conflict, evolutionary, symbolic interactionist, and cognitive paradigm. The analysis shows that the introduction of new ICT and new media is a result of a combination of political and emotional factors. The cognitive factors of economy, quality, and efficiency are secondary to the forementioned factors.
