Summary/Abstract: It is impossible to understand modern pedagogy without its primeval contact with the antiquity. The thoughts and insights of Plato, and later of Aristotle, in this sphere make the key points of contact between the present time and antiquity. There was a close connection between education and character development, and the socio-political order in the ancient Greece. Education was a reflection of life. Character development was not taken for granted but its purpose was to produce citizens worthy of governing the state. The ancient Greece needed men of good souls and strong bodies who will know how to lead the community and be the first in the ranks to fall for its freedom. In the realization of educational and character developmental ideals the Greeks understood three things: noble nature, persistent exercise and careful exhortations of the teacher. The aim of the action was free and rational. However, we have to keep in mind that the education in Greece was intended for the few, i.e. for the children of rich people of noble origin who were not exposed on the mountain to die. The sons of free citizens were supposed to become also free citizens.
