Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to determine whether the integration of the heritage into post-war reconstruction can be justified on broad social terms and to examine the potential for and challenges to heritage protection in war-torn communities. The first part of the paper outlines the current international context of the reception of the heritage in post-conflict situations, and the initial hypothesis that the heritage is important in preserving social patterns is examined in the case of Bosnia since the 1992-1995 war.
