Summary/Abstract: In 1893, when Camillo Boito posed his famous question, “Conservare o restaurare?” the dilemmas and concerns it raised were at the level of the methodological approach. This paper is a contribution to efforts to escape the dilemma at the level of a social and anthropological understanding of the role and value of the heritage.
