Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to show the roots of the term “region”, its usage in geography, sociology and history as well as to point to the main concepts of region in these disciplines that can be useful and innovative in historical analysis. The search for the definition of region is somehow difficult, so it is necessary to look on other disciplines of social sciences. The author has chosen some of the important authorities, such as Henri Lefebvre, Pierre Bourdieu, Anssi Paasi, Miroslav Hroch and Hans-Heinrich Nolte. He claims their approaches to the region can be well combined and used and they can open new topics and new looks on history. The article attempts to apply theoretical concepts on the example of Vysočina. Vysočina as region can be described as a geographical region as well as historical or sociological region. Thanks to this, the case of Vysočina provides a wide scale of possible definition of the region. The example of Vysočina shows how all the important concepts of region can be applied in particular historical settings.
