Summary/Abstract: Serbia, having possessed as of 1912 Kosovo, Macedonia and Sancak, known as South Serbia, signed a treaty with the Ottoman Empire in Istanbul on 14th March 1914 following the Balkan Wars. Although this peace treaty guaranteed the rights of the Muslims living in Serbia, upon the outbreak of the First World War on 28th July 1914, relations between the Ottoman Empire and Serbia broke down as of 1 November 1914. The Ottoman Empire also got involved in the war from 11 November 1914 onwards and Serbia and the Ottoman Empire fought against each other on different fronts. As a result, the Muslims living in Serbia were subjected to hardships, they were enrolled into military service and their properties were seized, this sort of tedious treatment imposed on them led to the outbreak of complaints and rebellion amongst the Muslim community living there.
