Summary/Abstract: The first part of this article analyzes the subject of multiculturalism in the light of selected aspects of the United Nations legal framework. These include standards of human rights and the geographic representation requirement for the election of judges to the International Tribunal of Justice and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, and for positions within the governing bodies of such international organizations as the International Seabed Authority. A concomitant of this requirement is the representation of various legal cultures. The activities of UNESCO and WTO are also analyzed from the perspective of multiculturalism and its protection. The second part of the article presents multicultural relations from an European and wider perspective, in the light of, among other things, the activities of the Council of Europe, and discusses the protection of indigenous cultures and the infl uence of globalization on intercultural communication in selected social environments of various countries. The different research and educational approaches to multiculturalism are also mentioned.
