Summary/Abstract: This paper discusses ‘migration myths, metaphors and mantras’, analyzing them in the context of Ukrainian international labor migration, the current economic crisis in Ukraine in terms of its impact on migration flows and, respectively, its consequences for care provision in the country in view of increasing out-migration of females as traditionally principle carers in the family. It attempts to answer the questions: Did the economic downturn affect migration intensity and patterns? What were the unpredicted (unexpected) implications of the economic crises for migration flows? How were migrants themselves and their families left behind at home affected and what ‘anti-crises’ strategies did they develop in response to challenges of their precarious position on the labor markets in the face of the global meltdown?
