The Data Preparation Process for Building Data Mining Models

Summary/Abstract: The article examines the data preparation process that serves as the initial step in building data mining models. Following a short introduction to the stages of data pre-processing procedure, the main rules for creating derived variables are presented. The author describes ways of handling time variables and categorical variables and briefly looks at problems generated by the imprecise definition of variables, missing values and outliers.
