Summary/Abstract: Dimitrie Cantemir is the first Romanian historian in the scientific sense of the term. Because of his works Description of Moldavia and The Growth and Decay of the Ottoman Empire he became the most important Romanian writer in Latin. The scientific style of his works has also artistic merits, expressed, at the syntactic level, in his interest in formal harmony and syntactic symmetry. In this essay, we have illustrated Cantemir’s preoccupation with style using two of his less known works, De antiquis et hodiernis Moldaviae nominibus (“On the Ancient and Recent Names of Moldavia”) and Historia Moldo-Vlachica (“Moldo-Walachian History”).
