Summary/Abstract: The article concentrates on the notion of pedagogical authority and its main types. It attempts to answer the following question: “How to revive real educational authorities in our computer-oriented civilization?” An increase in the number of socially destructive phenomena can lead to the expansion of false authorities, such as: representatives of religious sects, media “stars” or corrupted politicians. At the same time a strong demand for making contact with authoritative people who are ethically infallible arises. Bearing this in mind, the author evaluates the people commonly recognized as authorities, and presents different criteria for their selection. She also analyses the rules which are worth remembering while showing young people biographies worth copying. In the final part of the article the author states that personal dignity of an educator is mainly expressed in the student’s dignity and is a “key” to the teacher’s authority. Real authority is always a resultant of the man’s axiological greatness, it is a resultant value — the prize of respect for professional competence, and first of all for virtuous life.
