Summary/Abstract: The article treats the relation of the modern historical novel to the historical subject. As distinct to realistic authors who have suggested almost scholarly trueness of the historical stories, the (post)modern authors deal with the historical subject entirely free. They discover an analogy with the present day, create new interpretations of the traditional subjects and frequently argue with the steady approaches. The Ferdinand Peroutka’s novel „Pozdější život Panny“ („The later life of the Virgin“) which has been conceived as a polemics with the legend of Joan of Arc and Karel Pecka’s novel „Štěpení“ („Splitting“) which treats the Waldstein’s theme are showing, for example, a tendency of strong actualization of the historical contents. Both of the novels are more a testimony of the time of their creation than of the time when topics of these novels are situated – in Peroutka’s case this is the time of the 50s of the 20th century when the Post-February exile has lost the hope for a reverse of the political situation in Czechoslovakia, and in the case of Karel Pecka this is the time after August 1968. Both of the authors use a similar narrative technique, both of them conceive thein writing like novels about the genesis of the novel what emphasizes more the „creativeness“ of the historical scheme.
