Summary/Abstract: “Mistakes” of literary critique of the period are not necessarily caused by its incompetence. They very often are testifying on ideas of the period about what kind of the piece of art should look like and what function it should fulfill. They reflected not only aesthetical but also ideological criteria of the period. The study of such “mistakes” – the refusal of Mácha’s May is one among the famous ones – points to inner dynamics of the literary processes. The situation of the Czech Stalinism that was assessed by the critique of the period above all for its educative and persuasive function, and refusal of important literary works of the period that we today perceive as canonical works, was not a consequence of mistakes, errors and fallacies following misunderstandings but it was a consequence of the system of criteria that were an integral part of the socialist-realistic theory.
