Summary/Abstract: Cities have not only their physical bodies, consisting of buildings, streets, districts, squares and parks. They have also a subtler body, built up by imagination, preserved in one’s memory, immortalized by literature. One of the pleasures of journeying is the attempt to superpose one’s mental projection of a city over the real texture of the streets. The author embarks on such a journey to Barcelona with literary pictures in his mind, that he wants to discover in the real city. He also draws a sketch of the Catalan history and the city’s culture. One cannot know a city before having learned the art to read.
