Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the comparative analysis of the French legal concept ‘mariage’ and the Polish concept ‘małżeństwo’, expressed by different legal terms in different legal systems. The terms were researched in comparable specialized legal databases, which for the purpose of this study served as a corpus of legal texts. The introductory part of the paper discusses the definition of concept as well as the logical and ontological relations between concepts. In the next sections, the concepts of ‘małżeństwo’ and ‘mariage’ are analyzed from two perspectives: as a universal concept and as a comparable concept of national character. Then, the terms expressing those concepts are discussed with particular focus on hyponymy and translation issues of a French term mariage as the act of marriage. In the conclusion, it is emphasized that the concepts of ‘mariage’ and ‘małżeństwo’ are only partially compatible; each legal system conceptualizes marriage differently.
