Summary/Abstract: In the 19th century capital letters were used in writing much more often than nowadays. The main reasons were: the lack of unequivocal theoretical rule and a common tendency to use capital letters to express emotional attitude (both positive or negative). Graphical appearance of texts was determined by various factors including, amongst others: function of a given text, place of its publication, beliefs and habits of the author. Additional orthographical determinants can be found in translations into Polish. In the present article I use two different translations of the same text to show the diversity of orthography in the 19th century.
