Three Editions of M. Rej's Poem {Coż chcesz czynić moj miły człowiecze} in the Context of the Issue of Normalisation of 16th Century Literary Language

Summary/Abstract: The article compares language features and orthographic decisions made in the following editions of Mikołaj Rej’s poem {Coż chcesz czynic´ moj miły człowiecze}: i) a prestigious hard-cover tome entitled Postylla printed by Maciej Wirzbie˛ta in 1557; ii) and in two so-called loose prints targeted at general public (printed by Łazarz Andrysowic in 1556 and Mateusz Siebeneicher in 1558). The article attempts to analyse whether the same orthographic, normative rules were used in the exclusive edition and in ones directed at general public. The analysis shows that Wirzbięta’s text is characterized by more sophisticated and, in most cases, consistent orthographic and grammar rules. What is more, one can observe attempts to establish an internal norm adopted in the printing house (e.g. the predominance of the form {tym pięknym} over scarce {tem pięknem}). Loose prints share many features with prestigious texts, however they contain more inconsistent, flexible, innovative and regional elements (this is especially conspicuous in the 1558 edition). The text by Andrysowic is also more precise than the one by Siebeneicher, which shows that particular normswere immensely important in the mid 16th century.
