Summary/Abstract: The word trintsid from Hiiumaa is probably a German loanword. The following Estonian dialect words may be connected to the same German original Trense: Hls, Krk rents ‘something worn in front a women’s shirt, in order to camouflage a dirty shirt’, Krk ‘sling’, ‘braces’; Hää rents ‘chaff carrier’: rentsidega kanti põhku ‘chaff was carried with the rents’. Lembit Vaba (1997) links the above words with the word lents, adding that it is not clear how the change from l to r in anlaut has come about and suggests a Latvian original for the words with r in anlaut. The present author has no information on German dialects that can shed light on the meaning of Est. rents. Ger. Trense, however, has the meanings ‘Schnur, Litze, Pferdezaum’ (Kluge 1957), which perhaps lets us compare it with the aforementioned Estonian dialect words. A German loan in Estonian is also the maritime word trenss ‘rope used to fill gaps in the strands of a hawser’, trenssima ‘fill gaps in the strands of a hawser with a rope’.
