Summary/Abstract: The word tips ’plait (of hair)’ has been recorded, according to the card catalogue of Estonian dialect words, held at the Institute of the Estonian Language in Tallinn, in all parishes of the island of Hiiumaa. The stem has been borrowed from Estonian-Swedish dialects. The Estonian-Swedish word tips, which was earlier regarded as its possible source, has been recorded only once in the card dictionary of the Estonian-Swedish dialects (held at Uppsala) and could well be an occasional form. A possible source is the stem tıp- ’plait; ribbon in one’s hair’ to which -s was added in Estonian dialects. However, there is another possibility that s was added in Estonian-Swedish dialects to the word tıpl.
