Summary/Abstract: In his review, Arūnas Astramskas gave an evaluation of the monograph Experts of the Lithuanian Language in the Public Service of the Russian Empire by Giedrius Subačius. According to the reviewer, the monograph focuses on the examination of the actions, measures and qualification of the Russian administration in imposing Lithuanian publications in the Cyrillic script and preparing primary-school teachers for that matter. The monograph addresses the issues of practical russification level, the problems and decisions of local administration in implementing the policy prescribed by supreme authorities. The book highlights the application of the Cyrillic script to the Lithuanian language and analyses the diverging approaches supported by the government and experts – from more liberal to strictly extreme – and their changes.
