Summary/Abstract: The area south of Pest’s tourist-favoured centre is hardly recognisable from its appearance of some ten years ago. At that time, south of streamlined Elizabeth Bridge, the Art Nouveau splendour of Freedom Bridge and south of the less impressive Petôfi Bridge, a high-potential but unexploited area stretched along the riverbank, for many decades a virtual no-man’s-land. While opposite on the Buda side the modern blocks of the University of Technology slowly began to emerge, the Pest side remained a dreary symbol of post-Socialist neglect.
