Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the names of plants from two 19th-century dialectal dictionaries: Z. Gloger’s Dictionary of the Folk Dialect in the Tykocin Region and A. Osipowicz’s Dictionary of Augustów Dialect, reconstructed on the basis of the contents of J. Karłowicz’s Dictionary of Polish Dialects. The paper sought to show how the world of plants fixed in names was perceived and understood. It resulted from the analysis of the material that the basis for botanical vocabulary, contained in the two dictionaries, was the outward appearance of plants perceived by the senses, especially the sense of sight. This manner of perceiving the surrounding reality is in accord with the naive knowledge about the world.
