Health aspects of unemployment

Summary/Abstract: The study involves 75 publications of authors from Western Eu¬rope and Australia from the period of 1978—1998. The surveys are analyzed by design, object of study and results. The results are grouped by the impact of unemployment on: mortality, psychic health, somatic diseases, health related behaviours, and utilization of health care. Special attention is paid to the youth and long-time unemployment impact on health and capacity for work. The emphasis is placed on hypotheses explaining the mechanism of coronary-heart disease and mortality increase in active aged men 5—10 years following the unemployment peak level in a certain country. Sufficient number of scientific evidences on the relationship between unemployment and negative health events are revealed at both individual and population levels. A lack of longitudinal studies, designed especially for exploring the late impacts of current unemployment on health is acknowledged.
