Low-Weight Born Babies - A Qualitative Characteristic of the Population

Summary/Abstract: The increase of the number of children with low weight at birth brings about a worsening of the initial status of the newly borns in Bulgaria during the last few years. This article traces the link of low weight of newly boms with the high infant mortality of the low-weight infants which is till 13 times higher than that of newlyborns with normal weight. A forecast for the development of the cohorts gives even more unfavourable results due to data which indicate that the mothers of a large part of these low weight newly borns are subject to several unfavourable factors: too young age, low education, birth out of wedlock.
