Summary/Abstract: The history of the Romanian wine is in tune with the history of Romanian people. Both the periods of glory and the crises were reflected in the production of wine. During harsh times, Romanian wine was produced in small quantities and had a low quality. During the times of peace and prosperity, Romanian wine was produced in sufficient quantities and its quality was high. During the Communist period, Romanian wine passed through two phases: between 1948 and 1958, the production was reduced due to different reasons (collectivization and a bad management); after 1958, viticulture was practiced with a different mentality and the results were that the quantity and the quality of Romanian wine substantially increased. A part of the production was exported to the Western countries, where Romanian wine was highly appreciated. But the biggest markets for the Romanian wine were still the countries from the Socialist block. The Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and East Germany were the main countries where the Romanian wine was exported.
