Summary/Abstract: Review of the book: Anna Wieczorkiewicz’s Apetyt turysty. O doświadczaniu świata w podróży, Universitas, Kraków 2008. [‘Tourist’s Appetite. How the world is experienced when on the journey’] Apetyt turysty is a reply to growing interest in tourism topics as part of studies on contemporary culture. The book shows heterogeneous manifestations of the phenomenon in question, approaching them as a mirror of social sciences. Notions determining the framework of tourism studies are subject to thorough analysis, such as authenticity, glance, spectacle. Moreover, Ms. Wieczorkiewicz has introduced her own, broader perspective – the leitmotiv being the sense of taste being the one enabling cultural contact and crossing the borders delineated through the prism of visuality. The attitude of a ‘gourmet and the title ‘appetite’ thus offer new research opportunities not only with regards to tourism as such but also allow for noticing certain new interpretative threads in studies on various phenomena of present-day culture.
