Summary/Abstract: The study elaborates on a hermeneutical approach to an interpretation of space of a literary work. in a tradition of Ricoeur’s mimetic theory the author suggests to study literary space on three levels: as a fore-understanding, configuration, and refiguration. He also stipulates the first outline of spatial fore-understanding conception: there are, on the one hand, phenomenological meanings related to human corporeity (directions, perspective etc.) and to an existential understanding (especially experience of „dwelling“ which has been described by J. Patočka and Ch. Norberg-Schulz), on the other hand, there are meanings formed by culture and society which have been described particularly by H. Lefebvre. These two levels of spatial fore-understanding very often intertwine, for instance in mythological experiencing of a space. The analysis of spatial fore-understanding can help to clarify different kinds of spatial configuration and to explain some aspects of their reception.
