Summary/Abstract: The issue of incineration in the Orthodox space becomes an ever present topic, sparking debates and frequent controversies between different socio-professional categories. This paper tries to approach as objectively as possible, the position of the Romanian Orthodox Church on this issue, having as promoter the theologian Vladimir Prelipcean, but also that of the communist-era State whose speech is focused on the issue of atheism, where the death theme occupies a relatively restricted space, as compared to the amount of its ideas and content. Even though the communist regime was an atheist one and suitable for the development of cremation, it has not become an alternative to burial. It should be noted that throughout this period not even a single crematorium was built, and that none of the major leaders of the communist totalitarian system, wanted to be cremated, but buried (e. g.: Petru Groza, Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej, Ion Gheorghe Maurer, Manea Manescu and Paul Niculescu-Mizil).
