Summary/Abstract: The present study describes part of the investigations carried out during the project “Coordination of scientific activities towards elaboration of common strategy for environmental protection and sustainable management in the Syr Darya River Basin, in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan” financed by the European Union. The project is designed to consolidate complex and fundamental information and co-operation in the field of Syr Darya River Basin investigations. The aim of the presented research was to create a database containing infrastructure of education and knowledge on the environment of South Kazakhstan regions. Three groups of respondents were questioned: pupils, students and older inhabitants (over 40 years of age). In each group 20 questionnaires were planned. Educators and experts from governmental and non-governmental institutions were interviewed as well. Besides questionnaires and interviews, ecological education programmes were analysed. Based on the obtained results, a discussion concerning the present situation in Kazakhstan was carried out and future scenarios leading to the improvement of ecological education and sustainable development were proposed.
