Summary/Abstract: The text refers to the monograph Dejiny umeleckého prekladu na Slovensku I. [The history of literary translation in Slovakia I.] by Katarína Bednárová. It focuses on the question of the methodology of translation historiography and accentuates the author’s skill at mapping the intricate maze of materials on Slovak relations to foreign texts. The study points out the singularity of Bednárová’s approach, her encyclopedic knowledge of the entire spectrum of the history of Slovak translation and the fact that the author takes into consideration the conditioning of Slovak translation by the European inter-literary and inter-cultural contexts. Bednárova’s monograph is seen as an original opening of the discussion on unexplored questions and connections between issues that over centuries created Slovak cultural identity.
