Summary/Abstract: The study concentrates, in its first part, on historical aspects concerning the introduction of the Romanian language as a liturgical language in the Orthodox Romanian Church. We also present here some hypotheses formulated by different specialists to explain the reasons which supported this movement in the Romanian Church. Next, we pointed out the fact that the translation of liturgical texts was a process unfolding between 14th century and the beginning of the 18th century, yet the adaptation of those texts to the contemporary language is a continuous process. Some theological and cultural aspects are also included in this study. Finally, in conclusion, we argue that the return of the Church to the people’s language for liturgical reasons and purposes was a pastoral necessity but also a national cultural manifestation as a statement position regarding its own identity.
