Summary/Abstract: Reverting to the definition of folklore as a type of culture, the author outlines three subsystems in its structure: in the first place, there are conceptions and norms of world outlook; in the second – the folk arts; and in the third mechanisms of socialization of the artistic wealth pertaining to the ethnos. Folklore ritualism is particularly important with regard to this last case. What rites and theatre have in common is transformation. Two types of transformation are revealed in the folk rites: a) one symbolizing the transition from one social role to another (the wedding), and b) transformation of a sacral character (Christmas carollers, mummers. etc.). Further on a distinction is made between ritual and non-ritual collective artistic action by way of the non-folklore culture. The general conclusion is drawn that these phenomena present a culturological context of the professional theatrical culture which has different principles of formation and functioning.
