Summary/Abstract: The. author establishes that tour groups of Easter eggs with about nineteen variants are to be found among the Bulgarians. The white Easter eggs were richly ornamented and are to be found in several regions. Various ornaments in many colours were painted on these eggs, some of which are designs of very ancient origin. Some of the motifs are parallelled in the painted ceramics of Preslav which date back to the 9 th—10 th centuty. The white ornamented eggs from the village of Konak are called 'fiancee's' eggs. Every fiancee used to prepare 20 to 50 such ornamented eggs which she presented to the friends and relations of her fiance on the third day of Easter. This tradition, of ancient origin, was observed right up to the '30s of the 20th century. This research work allows us to suppose that the custom is of Old Slav origin.
