Summary/Abstract: Fishing is the traditional livelihood of the population along the Black Sea coast. The types ox fish to be found in the Black Sea have been thoroughly studied on the basis of a wealth of archives and printed matter, and an equally thorough study has been made of the fishing seasons, the gear used, which are classified according to the way they work, by hooking, trapping, filtering and enclosing. Of course, boats play an important part in fishing, made by skilful shipwrights — both the smaller ones are called kaiks and limbos, and the larger ones known as maunas and alamanas. Up until the 40's of the present century dolphins were also fished for in the Blask Sea. Along the Varna coast the lakes were also fished in: the Varna and Beloslav Lakes and the mouth of the River Kamchia, the fish and crayfish being caught by primitive means, baskets, nets, etc. The article describes in detail the way in which the fishing nets were made and all the means used to make them strong and stable; the sale and preservation of fish on the fish markets are also described and their exports to foreign countries.
