An Unknown Chapter from the Life of V. A. Pogorielov

Summary/Abstract: The paper contains one part of the memoirs of Bronislava Pogorielovova, the wife of the Russian slavist V. Pogorielov (21. 3. /3. 4. 1872 – 2. 9. 1955) who in the years 1923-1945 held a position at the Comenius University, Bratislava, but escaped to Germany before the invasion of Russian troops. These memoirs have not been published so far. The manuscript has app. 40 pages and is divided into three parts: the first part shows the vicissitudes of the early months of exile the Pogorielov family had to endure, the second part describes their stay in Passau which lasted for several years, and the third part depicts their life in Prien, Dornstadt and Munich. In this paper, the whole of the first part is published. The manuscript original is preserved in the family archives of D. V. Kirilčuk, V. Pogorielov`s grand-son, who lives in Cleveland, USA. One copy, nevertheless, is in possession of the professor's grand-daughter T. Rymarenková from Bratislava.
