Summary/Abstract: It is usually argued that the major revolution in theatre in the past fifty years has been the increased power of the director as the creative force at the expense of the playwright. Hence dramatists were perpetually forced to search for a new identity and new dramatic forms, particularly while the collective writing flourished and the text seemed no longer of major importance. However, the French dramaturgy of the 1980s and 1990s gives proof that the text has remained an essential element of theatrical creation. The only real change lies in the fact that theatre has become more introspective and self-contained, mainly because the majority of French playwrights are theatre professionals by training and experience.
